What Are Fire Dampers?

Fire dampers are passive fire protection devices used in HVAC ducts. They are designed to prevent the spread of fire and smoke through ventilation systems, especially where the ducts penetrate fire-resistance-rated walls and floors.

When a rise in temperature (typically 165°F or 74°C) is detected, the damper’s fusible link melts, causing the damper to close and seal off the duct, stopping the fire and smoke from spreading further. Think of them as the “firewalls” of HVAC systems—critical, automatic, and lifesaving.

Fire dampers are required in virtually all commercial and high-occupancy buildings under global fire safety codes, including NFPA, UL, and European standards.
